El Paso - Free music, free movies
Here is a post on the City of El Paso's Web site talking about free concert series. But the thing to really take note of is every Friday resuming July 8 you can take in a free concert at Alfresco! Fridays and then walk a few feet to see a free movie at the Abraham Chavez Theatre with the movie tied in with the music themewise. They do sell booze and snacks for the concert. So check it out! For more information, call the number below or google city of el paso texas or el paso convention and visitors bureau. Enough of me boring you. Go! Next week!

What kind of cheap fun awaits those of thee courageous enough to brave the Chihuahuan desert heat? Well a cool, air conditioned Saturday afternoon awaits thee at the El Paso Museum of Art's World Cinema Series...

EL PASO: SF Bay Area ex-pat back on the border...
Chico's Tacos? - egads, no way, dude...
if yourstruly had friends visiting from out of town one of the places we'd be happy to introduce them to would be Dona Lupe's Cafe, in the old Cinco Puntos neighborhood on 2919 Pershing, brekkie and lunch only, but excellent service & great food alongside very reasonable prices makes Dona Lupe's a notable choice amongst the many (!!!) restaurants in ol' EPT.
and a bit of choice linky goodness for those of ye out there with intentions of communing with Nature in the the Chihuahuan Desert, particularly in and around the Franklin Mountains, check out the

El PASO: Moontime Pizza Update
The reason it closed wasn't because it was doing badly but mainly because it couldn't get along with its upstairs neighbor. Moontime Pizza was right underneath a kinda upscale place whose owner did not appreciate the noise from Moontime's live music. Efforts were made to further soundproof Moontime, but apparently it wasn't enough so Moontime's people decided to bow out in Oct. or Nov. last year. From the looks of it there are some renovations going on inside Moontime but it's doubtful it will be a live music venue again unless they decide to let flute and clarinet ensembles play there. Of course they'd have to keep the noise down.

EL PASO: Jamocha vs. da Starbucks empire
Starbucks has methodically infested cities nationwide, eagerly feeding the caffeine thirst of a jittery nation. Like all things semi-cool/cool it took forever for Starbucks to finally get to El Paso. But when it did, it was well-received. Under the radar however a small-time businessman opened up his own coffee shop — Jamocha Coffee and Fudge — and took the place of the now departed Dolca Vita as a popular place to hang out. Jamocha, conveniently located near the University of Texas at El Paso campus, provides a variety of coffee drinks along with great snacks (fudge, muffins, etc.) and even delicious sandwiches and salads at reasonable prices (you could have a nice meal and drink for less than $10). In addition to great eats and drinks da service is incredible. Free wireless Internet is offered to customers as well as a couple of couches and a flat screen TV to just veg out and talk with friends. One time, after a UTEP basketball game, I even overheard three people (a Christian, a Jew and a Muslim) on the couch who were friends having a good ol time talking and having fun. Coffee as a way to achieve world peace? In December Jamocha even stayed open 24 hours a day for a week during UTEP finals for a place for students to study or take a break. Massages were even offered at a reasonable price (since I graduated long ago, I thought I woulda looked foolish tryin to get a massage). But all may not be cozy in da land of Jamocha. Starbucks is constructing its latest location across the street from Jamocha. It is expected to open sometime this spring. Cue Darth Vader's theme music...

EL PASO: Moontime Pizza, RIP
Remember the dire warnings of UC's El Paso member letsbolt last year about Moontime, one of the few places to see touring bands for cheap in EP. He claimed its days were numbered back in September, turns out he was right. Well in a new UC feature called "I'm too lazy to come up with something new" we're going to catch up with letsbolt and the other El Pasoans and find out what happened and what club is filling this huge void in their lives.

EL PASO: China to the rescue: El Paso's best 99 Cent Store
I imagine there are few readers of unknown city who've never ventured in a dollar store (after all, this site is about finding the cheapest shit around), so I submit for your browsing pleasure the 99 Cent Store at 2900 Pershing and Piedras, in El Paso's Five Points/Manhattan Heights Neighborhood.
This is without a doubt, El Paso's best 99 Cent Store.
Huge, about the size of an old-school Walgreens (because that's what used to be at this location), and stacked nearly to the ceilings with just about every item that can be molded, pressed, woven and blister-packaged with current Chinese manufacturing technology.
